I am with you.
I have had it with this wierd weather. Here on Long Island, we didn't have a winter untill spring, and now here it is April 15th the bees can't fly, I'm stuck inside, and there is an inch of rain water on the ground. My nuk boxs are ready, and if I paint things any more they will be 1/2" over size! Oh well, come July I'll most likely be complaining about the lack of rain!
Patience my butt! I need to be one with the bees, or somthing like that.

Snowing like crazy here......rain expected later. A LOT of rain. I was complaining about it earlier today until, when I was out staring glumly at a quiet entrance board, I heard a sickening crash. A young man lost control of his car on this busy, icy road and smashed into a phone pole two houses up from me. They had to cut him out and it took almost 40 minutes. The situation was bad enough to have a helicopter on its way in case things took a turn from bad to terrible. When I walked back across my property, one bee came out and walked around a bit before heading back into the hive.
I was grateful to see her but reminded that I really don't have much to complain about.

Snow, Sleet, and freezing rain, back to snow so far today.
The next few days are going to be cold and wet.

I'm sitting here in a toasty 77 degrees. :) Outside its another story....
This past week, with a chest cold that had me sleeping 15 hours on Friday, I spent most of the time feeding nucs and splits, just to make sure they don't starve out. Now the next week calls for temps to not hit above 50 till maybe Friday. I heard someone say this is heading for the coldest spring thus far for the east coast in 137 years.
And its not "global warming" any longer. Too many things are not adding up. So they are now calling it "climate change". ;)

The sun just came out a few minutes ago and my hives are buzzing now. We are supposed to have windy weather tomorow and nice on Tuesday.

Surely, we're all suffering from CCD: Climate Change Depression :)
Tomorrow I don't know if I'm going to wake up to 3" of rain or 12" of snow, but in either case it's going to be windy. And Cold. Again. Or is that still?
10 minutes later.... well it's 35° now and snowing. I was so much hoping for rain...

At what temp do bees cluster. It is raining and 50f here and I noticed they are all clustered above the screen bottom board.. I thought they did not fly at that temp but would be active inside the hive..

Bees begin to cluster at temperatures around 55° give or take. Think about it. First, they're cold blooded. Second, they need to keep the brood nest around 93° and they do that by covering the brood. Depending on the temperature and the hive population and the amount of brood they're trying to keep warm, they're going to use more or less of the population for the job. The colder it is, the more bees will be called up to make heat. 50° is not too cold for bees to fly, but it is way to cold for a handful of bees to keep warm. In a small spring cluster, many of the bees are going to be in the brood nest taking turns doing their isometric exercises to generate heat. At colder temperatures, ALL the bees are going to be working to keep the brood nest warm. That doesn't mean a few bees can't leave the hive to forage briefly or take a cleansing flight when weather permits.

Peggjam, same here east of you, lot's of snow and still snowing... I've delayed going into work for a few hours to let the fearless play bumper-cars.
I would say we have eight inches on the ground. I am glad one of my neighbors stopped by this morning with his four wheeler and plowed me out.
All we've had is rain from this nor'easter, we're down on the South Shore south of Boston (but not on the Cape), but the wind is howling. My son went to work this morning down in Middleboro, it took him half an hour longer because of all of the downed trees, when he got there they had no power so all were sent home. My mother has no power, either, but for some reason I do (for now!). It's 50° out there, so there's no danger of snow for us at all.

>>>Snow here, lots an lots of snow....so much for global warming or climate change or whatever you want to call it .
No individual storm system or weather event can prove or disprove climate change.
That being said, climate change research has been predicting the unstable weather patterns we appear to be having in the US the last several years. More rain and floods in the wet season, more heat in the summers, greater fluctuations in temp year round.
Losing 90% of the peaches in NC due to a snap freeze hurts a lot of folks. But what'll we do when we lose 90% of the wheat or feed-corn in the midwest?

I'm in the Berkshires, almost the very northwest corner of MA. My daughter called from Syracuse NY where they are getting snow. Luckily( I use the term loosely) it hasn't stopped raining here since saturday night. It wanted to snow but temp went up. The winds are storng. They blew the downspout off the house. Using the time to assemble more wooden frames which I always enjoy.I hived two packages from Betterbee sat morning then battened down the hatches. It can't last forever. keep a smile!

Leafcutter,
So tell me, what exactly did they call drastic weather events in years past before fancy labels such as "global warming" and "climate change"? And your only focused on weather events the last "several" years? Like this stuff just started happening???
Your asking what will we do when we lose 90% of wheat or corn? My best guess is probably the same thing we did last time, and the time before that, and the time before that....with the exception of a few more doomsdayers running around... ;)

The only thing that is consistent with weather and climate is that it is inconsistent.
The weather and climate have been changing since the beginning.
If the environment of the Earth had stayed consistent from the beginning, WE WOULD NOT BE HERE!!!

>>>So tell me, what exactly did they call drastic weather events in years past before fancy labels such as "global warming" and "climate change"?
In the past they called them NorEaster's, droughts, hurracaines, cold snaps, and heat waves among other things. Like today. I think your question stems from the observation that nowadays there is a clear tendency to blame any unusual weather event on climate change. Tiger had to wear woolies at Augusta? Must be climate change. Phooey.
This media dramatization bothers me too. It makes some people scared and drives others to concule that the whole concept is a crock, both of which are not helpful. Even so, the media hype doesn't get us off the hook: just because Al Gore pollutes a lot personally, doesn't mean that climate change doesn't exist.
>>>And your only focused on weather events the last "several" years?
The 10 hottest years on record have all occurred since 1990 - that counts as several years to me. Polar bears on the threatened list? Malaria spreading into new places? Glaciers disappearing? All in my short lifetime of several years.
>>>Like this stuff just started happening???
This is an important point. No, climate change did not just start happening: not too long ago (12k yrs?), the US was under a mile of ice. The climate is always in flux and always will be. But Yes, unprecedented human release of long buried CO2 into the atmosphere did just start happening (last 1-2 centuries). Maybe it'll turn out not to matter, but we cant ignore the fact that the human forces at work today have not always been a part of the equation during the cycles in the past.
I hope everyone back east gets dried out soon and back to better weather.

Leafcutter, you sound reasonable. The site below has many articles and links both pro/con or for/against all the hype of global warming. It gives some perspective from both sides for those who are open enough to listen to both sides of an issue.

>>unprecedented human release of long buried CO2 into the atmosphere did just start happening (last 1-2 centuries
Just for interest sake, because arguing about this is a total waste of time,
Listening to a guy the other day mentioning CO2 in the atmosphere. Please correct me if I am wrong, If he was talking parts per thousand, ten thousand, hundred thousand, or millions, I simply cant remember nor does it really matter in my day of life.
But anyway, he was saying these green houses pump in CO2 up to 1000 parts per, 100 years ago the atmosphere was at 250 parts per, and now we are at 300 plus. He claims our plants in the world is actually Co2 deprived, and well, an increase of CO2 would promote better vegetative growth and filter us the good stuff
.
The only problem is, we seem to be in a hurry to cut down all that free standing vegetation.
We keep talking C02 as a toxin, but its not. The plants need it to live and thrive.
Now is it the cars pumping out the C02 that is getting us into this warming trend, or is it the ocean responding to a circular cycle that is releasing the C02. I dont know, and how long of a cycle are we seeing, 100 years, 200 years, more, less, how much are we accelerating it, or are we just as insignificant to the whole of things as we probable are. I dont know, still I like to comment,
But what I do know is that everything is in THEORY, just as science dictates it.

The sad thing is this, the polar caps can only spend COLD cash without trouble between the fall and spring equinox. Now the north pole is spending cold it simply does not have to spend (polar day length), so rather than blame Al Gore, it would be wiser to pull the North Poles weather credit card.
As for you folks back east, if it is warm in winter...it'll cost ya. If this keeps up y'all will be planting in November. The thing about the weather is this, we are under it.
BTW Jesus is the Answer, didn't kids kid you about your name in school?

Out here our cold spells are linked to every time Arnold says something politically incorrect. I expect our climate to stabilize once he finishes his two term limit as governator.

>We have been having some good wind storms lately. But nothing like what I have been seeing in the east. wow I wish you guys the best.
We got hammered pretty good yesterday in that Northeaster. Lincoln County, where I live, has been declared a disaster area and they've called in the National Guard to help get things back in order. Lots of flooding, washed out roads, downed trees and powerlines, etc. The office where I work is nearer the coast, 2 miles down a dead end dirt road. The road is barely passable now, but trees have taken down the power- we're without power and they're saying it'll be 3-4 day before it's back on. Until then I'm largely out of work. A few towns right down on the water are in really rough shape. High tide came around 11am yesterday morning driven in by 25' waves and 60 mile per hour winds. Woof.
