Hello
Well after dealing with three swarms which two got away i went and put some candy in the new queen cage on the first hive there are not more virgins except in my third hive and i left them only two but i did see where two hatched out but did not find them in the hive. I was hoping the first hive and third hive would be my honey getters but it seems the second hive is going full steam when they use to be the weakest one and even my new hives that i got wednesday are working full force. But tonite i heard a queen piping in the first hive could it be the new queen piping sso the bees will pay attention to her thee is no virgins and the hive is still full strenght and ready for me to super once i find out if the new queen is lose and laying.

Thomas,
I don't have the answer to your question but I sure would like to know what a queen sounds like when she is piping.

yes new queen do pipe and mated queen do also as to the sound it is like cheep of a young bird. and you do have a queen in the hive. when you did not find her , she was most probabley on her mating flight. good luck ROCK.

To me it sounds sort of like a duck quacking.

The only time I have ever heard queens piping is when they sense the presence of another queen. I had one occurance last year when I was marking queens using the same marking cage over and over. After about the fifth or sixth queen to be marked the next queen started piping as soon as I put her in the cage. There were no other queens present but she appearantly was reacting to the smell of the previous occupents. She quieted down after a minute or two probably because the pherimones dissapated quickly. If you remove a queen from a hive it only takes the bees about half an hour to start acting like they know the queen is missing. If your hive was queenless I doubt that the new queen would detect anything to trigger piping.

Everytime I'm shipping more than one queen, they all pipe at each other.

I have never heard an actual queen piping, only recordings of the event, perhaps this year I will with the aid of hearing aids.

If anyone knows of a link to a queen piping
let me know. I would love to experiance it.

I heard queen piping yesterday. After 12 days and no brood, I put a new queen in a hive. When I inspected on day 14, the queen was piping. I have read that it can mean several things.. either "Mated queens may briefly pipe after being released in a hive." or a battle cry to another queen in the hive.
It is probably the battle cry in my case since she was piping away whilst still in the cage and was not doing so on day 13.
I am trying to research what will happen next.. Would the workers kill one of the queens? Would they roam around looking for each other? What happens when they meet?
Very interesting stuff..
Had a newly mated one today (laying) that sounded almost like a cat.

Hello
Well i know better now after putting the candy in the queen cage and thinking the bees will take her they did the opposite. After the rain and the wind blown all day i found the new queen dead outside the hive and i did not hear any piping sound so now i am waiting to see if my over looked virgin has been mated or will she go on her mating flight. And my second hive i left them two cells even thou two were opened and i could not find the virgins so now it's a waiting game. And i have seen black berries ready to bloom when this weather gets right.

You might have been able to get away with introducing her in the fall. I have accidentally introduced a second queen into a queenright hive in late August and later found both queens laying only a couptle frames from each other. In the spring it is a whole different situation.
