I have access to several horizontally halved whisky barrels. Has anyone ever tried using one for a hive? Seems like the curve would be condusive to natural comb building.

It should work great if the volume is right. If the barrels are more than 19" or so, I would rethink it as they will be difficult to keep the combs straight, the combs will get VERY heavy probably break while you work the hive, or even worse after you work it.

I agree with Scot. More than 19" and I'd figure they are too long. But otherwise it sounds like a nice idea.

I think there is a reason for langstroth's decision to stick within 19". Personally I believe he was right. I still prefer 16" combs, I know its not compatible with lang's equipment, but that's not really my goal.

If They are large volume make a divider in the middle and cut an entrance on each end and make two. don't worry about large comb if you are keeping them strait as they build the comb gets pretty sturdy as it ages. I have stacked season comb it the bed of my truck one on top of the other and was suprised they did not break. Would be great to see pics when you are done good luck.
