i made guides with hemp cord dipped in wax and
stapled onto the bars. i was in a hurry to hive a
swarm and tried it as an attempt to get done fast.
the bees accepted them and have built nice comb on
them. i don't plan on using this technique as my
method of choice but for those with limited tools
(no table saw) i think it would be great.

I had heard of doing that and made a few just as an experiment. I put them in the back though so they haven't got to them yet. Glad to know that they work!

Whattya mean be hemp? Where do you get it? I'll try a couple. Is it better than just bevelling the bottoms?

Thanks,

Hawk

hemp twine, you can get it in any hardware store. You have to smell it though to make sure it isn't preserved with kerosene or other petrol. Its not "better" its just a different way of doing it. I think the bevels are the best bet for long term combs.

Long term = more than five years or more than five months?
