View Full Version : Ventilation?
What is the best way ventilate a topbar? I made lids for mine that fit pretty snug.

I built this last one with no screened bottom and no entrance except the gap at the front for the first bar. I haven't seen any bee beards or indications of ventilation problems. The bees seem to ventilate it fine. Probably part of that is the horizontal effect. There isn't the "attic" effect or the chimney effect you get in a vertical hive, where all the heat rises to the top and gets trapped.

If I were going to ventilate a top bar hive, I would drill a hole in the back just above the bottom board.
