Any advantage to using 2 follower board on the ends ( then 8 frames of foundation ) for 10 deep langs ?

Does anyone install spring packages in the deeps with 5 frames and 2 follower boards and then placing the syrup feeder/pollen patty inside on the hive floor ???

Actually, follower boards are usually used with 9 frames (in a 10 frame box). The advantage is a degree of insulation to the outer surfaces of the outer two combs so that the queen is likely to lay eggs there. It is sometimes used in section comb honey production when the bees are crowded down to one brood chamber just prior to the main nectar flow.

The other advantage is that the removal of one of the follower boards makes it easier to remove the first frame when one is doing an inspection. Some like to use the followers in all of their brood chambers for this reason.

You could install package bees and feed them as you describe, but the syrup is probably more accessible (esp. in cool temps) when it is placed on or directly above the frame top bars, above the feeding cluster.

Advantages: Easier to pull out the first frame. Less condensation and more warmth in the winter. Lighter boxes.

Disavantages: Less brood combs.

I've never had luck with pollen patties unless they were in CONTACT with the cluster.
