I have a 30 yr old 2 frame reversible, manual extractor from Kelley's. I noticed they have a 9 frame reel which can be used to convert this to a 9 frame radial. Would this work OK as a manual extractor or would I need to mount a motor. I have 25 colonies and the 2 frame is OK, just thought it might speed things up a bit.

i would recommend a motor. I also use a 4 frame tangential extractor (don't know the brand) which I have converted to a 10 frame radial. to this new stainless steel reel I have added a variable speed (very old) drill motor plus a dial voltage regulator to control the speed. and yes it does speed up processing greatly (plus it allow a lag here and there which allows you to take a coffee break from time to time).

ps... I will be taking some pictures of my uncapping table for anothe beesource member would you like for me to take a picture or two of my extractor?

I agree with Tecumseh--add a motor to mske life easier. I likewise added a variable speed half inch drill to our six frame dadant--works wonderfully. Drills are cheap on ebay!

The drill sounds like a great idea especially since I have several lying around my shop not in use. Never thought about it. I appreciate the help, a picture would be great. I actually have two of these extractors so I will have a manual on standby if needed. Thanks again..

I am just now getting around to converting my extractor. I have a half inch drill but it does not seem to have the power to turn the extractor reel. Really seems to put a load on it. Anyone using a drill as power supply ,,, do you use it direct or use a belt? I have tried it using a belt with an empty extractor. Sounds like it doesn't have enough muscle..... Maybe I need to try a different drill? Any help apprieciated.

If you get the reel from Kelley, can you run deep frames in it?

The reel from Kelleys will only take shallow and medium frames.

Thanks Preacher, I measured my tangential and it's only 18.5" so the reel is a no-go anyway:(
