I just went out and did a little looking for 1/8" hardware cloth since I can't find it locally.
Ace Hardware on-line has a 50'x24" roll for $134.55, 36"x50' for $224.55 ($4.49 a running foot).
Brushy Mountain has 36" wide for $1.75 a running foot.
Mc-Master Carr has 36" for $1.15 a running foot.

I found it in my local hardware store also called #8 hardware cloth the kid in the store didn't know it was the same. It was 36" wide and they sold it by the foot. I didn't need that much and I'm glad I didn't have to buy a whole roll.

There are lots of different grades of hardware cloth.--cheepie stuff and some that is galvenized and some galvenized after making and probably many more. Some is stiff and some is limp as a noodle. There is even stainless because the Sundance II pollen trap uses stainless in the pollen removal drawer.

my local hardware company ordered it for me. It was about 100 for 100 foot roll of 36 inch. no shipping. If you build your own equipment surprising how much you can use it. Plus you can sell it to your friends ;)

Ross

I bought 50' x 24" at Ace and it was way cheaper than that
something like $60
the online thingy sounds like it's showing the /ft price
I looked at the website and it says exactly what you posted but that's not what I paid in the store

It sounded way higher than I thought it should too, but my local doesn't stock anything.

Ross, Do you happen to have the Mcmaster catalog #? for the cheapest screen noted above?

I have an open account with them, but have never been able to find the cheapest screen through all the search pages. Looks like you have done the hard part. Thanks, Todd

Dadant can order it for you at a very good price. I am not sure how close you are to the Texas branch , but shipping the hardware cloth will probably double the price.

OK, my experience now. I bought a 100'x36" roll from my local ACE. It was $129 by taking the whole roll, $3.90 a foot if you didn't. It is 27 ga galvanized after weaving, not welded. It is quite soft, easily cut with a utility knife or scissors. It will unravel at the edges somewhat. I think if I did it again, I would order the welded, somewhat heavier from McMaster-Carr. The stuff from Brushy is similar to the McMaster. The stuff from Ace is usable, just lighter, more fragile than I would have wished.

In our area you can order it from Home Depot. I think a 36"x100ft roll was under $100.

NW Indianabeekeper can tell you better. He ordered it and we split the roll.

I got my #8 Hardware cloth from a farm supply store. Was the welded galvanized type, 36"x50' roll. They had to order it, but it was only $60. So don't rule out the farm supply places.

Farm supply like TSC as BusyBee suggested. I got a 24" x 100' roll for $80 bucks. Not the highest grade but it does the job.

If the farm supply stores don't have it, or the price isn't reasonable, goto you local hardware store (whether it be Ace, Home Depot, Menards, whoever) and see what "brand" of 1/4" they carry.

You can then track down a phone number and/or address for that company and ask them for a product number for #8 mesh when supplying it to that local hardware store. This eliminates the "we don't carry it" -lazy BS- .

As Dan mentioned, I was able to get it through Home Depot, but not before I tracked down their wholesaler (in chicago). This supplier will vary by area (yours is not likely to be the same as mine).

Shipping is the biggest expense, and so if you a little paper work and phone calling you will save a lot of money. We got 3'x100' for 2'x100' price.

When dealing with a local supplier, their image is on the line and often they will deliver a better quality product (they know you are in driving distance and you're not afraid to drive back). Mail orders however know you aren't going to ship back half a roll at $45, and so you can be stuck with snags and poorly aligned mesh.
