Can anyone recommend a decent lightweight collapsible "pocket" veil? I've Googled and found something called a "Pocket Veil" online but it's tough to see what the thing actually looks like.
I'm not looking for anything industrial strength - I already have a "working" veil that I like. What I'm after is something compact, easy to use and convenient that will afford me some minimal protection for when I want to poke around the hives more closely than usual but without actually working them.
Thanks

I just use a insect veil I purchased at Walmart in camping good section for a couple bucks. Worn over a golfer style hat. Works great. Hat does a good job soaking up sweat and veil can just be stuffed in pocket when not wearing. ;)

My wife purchased some collapsible garden hats a few years back at Lowes. They are nothing but fabric with a spring steal ring for the brim. You just twist them and they go down to about 3 ½ inches in diameter. They also come with a little cloth bag to store them in. I was thinking about taking one and sewing a lightweight veil to the brim. It would be an idea light and portable veil.
Well it turns out you can buy them already made.

The headnet. It's about the size of a large handkercheif in your pocket. Very handy. To totally sting proof but it sure slows them down. If you put a base ball cap on under it, it will keep them off your face.

The hat in a bag is very similar to some I got from Lee Valley.

I've used them around the bees many times and find them to be effective and well made. I think the only problem could be that really aggressive bees could come up under the veil, which is the problem with all veils I guess.

Here's another, but they use scare tactics to
sell it, so I'd rather you didn't buy theirs.

Pete,
I've worked with some S.American beeks who didn't bother with fancy, prefab veils. Theirs were just a wrap of black mesh with some elastic at the top. So any of these should suit you fine. I think you're on to something. I too would much rather have one in the pocket when wanted rather than lugging the big one around unnecessarily.

I'm looking for a tulie style that has the bottom drawstring. Any ideas where to find one?
