Ok Carpenters and Builders,
I've been delaying making some wooden division/ follower boards because I'm unsure how to make "ears" by which to hang them on the frame rests. I could knotch them into a 1x board. However, I'm afraid that the grain orientation of a hanging 1x would be weak and they could split off.

I could be overly cautious since such a board would only carry its own weight and would be resting on the bottom board anyway.

Thank ye,
Waya

For the followers in my dedicated mating nucs (4 2-frame shallows in standard langstroth box) I am cutting dado's in the ends of the box the depth of the frame rest (3/8") and just using a full length piece of wood. The bees won't sneak around these babies. For the followers I intend to make that don't involve modifying the box, I was just planning on nailing a 5/8" tall strip of wood to the top of the board to sit on the frame rest.

I think you could notch the 1x just fine since as you say, it would be resting on the bottom anyways.

You can cut a 3/4" by 5/8" top bar and put a 1/4" luan sheet in that. Either on one side or in a groove in the middle.

My method smile.gif

Use 3/8" or 3/4" thick plywood for the "board" and simply nail-on a 3/8" thick (top-to-bottom) x width-to-match-board x 19" long "stick" across the top.
