I recently attended the beekeeping class of Georgia Beekeepers. Folks at the University of GA are endorsing the use of a full screen bottom board for the maintenance of Varroa mite as well as ventilation. Anybody have a comment on this application??

I use them and I think alot of others on here do also. As for the "only" treatment for varroa other methods are required IMO. Ventilation yes it works.

There has been so much discussion here it will make your head swim.
Try the search feature in the top right hand corner of this page, click it and type in screened bottom board or SBB. Set the forums to 'all open forums', click search. There will be so much info you'll be a believer in no time.

(a.) screened bottoms are a wonderful and useful piece of beekeeping equipment for keeping mites at bay.
(b.) screened bottoms improve ventilation, but don't do much for stopping mites.
(c.) since screened bottoms improve hive ventilation, instead of slowing down mites, they may actually aid mite reproduction.

Even if you question the efficacy of sbb against mites there is no reason not to use them to aid in ventillation.(especially here in GA)
Give it a try on one of your hives and you will see. Try pulling the top and inner cover off a decently strong hive and put an upside down bottom board(not screened) on top. This provides great ventillation in combination with the sbb and a second entrance.
Much of beekeeping is local, so just give it all a try!
