Anyone ever use one for uncapping (a hobbyist level)? You know, like a spatula with a blade 1/8" below the plane of the spatula. A friend locally mentioned that he uses one for 4 hive's worth of uncapping; sounds inexpensive and perhaps easy. Thoughts?

My wire-based cheese slicer would need more
tension to cut through cappings - its a little
loose. But I don't see why any sharp object
with a handle could not be used to uncap.
I messed around with a 400 milliwatt laser
and some servomotors last summer trying to
make a "laser uncapper". It worked ok,
vaporized the cappings and did not heat up
the honey in the cells much at all, but
I can't see making it into a product, as
a laser that could be moved fast enough to
be as fast as a chain uncapper would have
to be powerful - several watts! This would
be both expensive and a dangerous tool.

Jim, why don't you work on a laser-zapper for SHB and Varroa destructor. You could use a spectrographic scanner to identify the little pests and computer-controlled micro-steppers to aim the laser. Probably wouldn't cost more than $4-5000 per hive.....

My good friend Zach beat everyone else to it
already, with plain old electricity.
Looky here:

...and yeah, Zach racked up a lot more "geek points"
than dollars with his little invention.
...I TOLD him to call it "Crispy Critters"
if he wanted it to sell

but would he listen? Nooooo.

Cheese slicer--Never thought of that, I found one of those in the kitchen drawer and it is even stainless--will try it next time we uncap some comb.

I would not bother. I'd rather sell a cheese slicer and use my hot knife to slice cheese.

What do you think of my preliminary plans for an uncapping tank with a mounted cheese slicer uncapper?
