Wood Preservatives

Hi,

What are some thoughts on using wood preservatives, such as copper napthenate, to treat woodenware before painting. Is it safe and is it worth the effort and cost?

I have used boiled linseed oil with good results. I will paint the hive body and wooden parts (not the frames) before I assemble them. Then while they are still wet assemble the parts. Be sure to wipe off any excess, as it will not completly dry and stay sticky. The oil acts as wood preservative and helps the nails make for a very firm bond. I will paint both the inside and outside parts. The bees seem to have no problems with the oil after it drys and the parts are holding up well. No additional paint or preservative is used, as I like the wooden look. Also, it blends into the back ground giving you a more natural look compared with white.
