i've been reading up on this and trying to learn. at times it doesn't sound very complicated, but i still don't know enough to start using it.
what i like about it is that i can stand behind the hive and (without opening it) fog right through the screen botom board (during any season). it's sounds very efficient and user friendly.
i looked at wal-mart (i'm probably looking in the wrong place) for the fogger and they came up empty.
is the food grade mineral oil simply the mineral oil they sell at wal-mart as a laxative?
i don't have enough details yet (or i'm just not finding them) concerning what goes in the fogger and how much etc.
i know these are basic questions that have been asked time and time again by others, but i want to learn this and try it.
thanks.
buford, you are doing the right thing by trying to go by exactly what the good Dr. has tested. Call the Dr. or email him. He will be glad to tell you what you need to know and show you where it is on the web. Take care JJ

Ebay usually has foggers for a good price. Just be carful that they are NOT used. Ones at hardware stores are usually more expensive.
APK
buford, I dont know if you can find the Burgess 1443 any longer. They were suppose to stop making that model. I think the Dr. is testing the Black flag model to see if it would put out the same as the 1443 model. I get my FGMO from STE OIL. You can call Sam Perez at 1-800-967-1931 ex-25. Take care JJ

>i looked at wal-mart (i'm probably looking in the wrong place) for the fogger and they came up empty.
I got mine at Ace hardware. Try the home stores like Lowes and Home Depot too.
>is the food grade mineral oil simply the mineral oil they sell at wal-mart as a laxative?
That depends. If you want to do the thymol and the cords then I would make sure you get the right weight of oil. But for fogging just oil it seems to work fine for me.
>i don't have enough details yet (or i'm just not finding them) concerning what goes in the fogger and how much etc.
I use straight FGMO. The latest thing some people are trying (and I have not) is thymol in the oil.

Dear Jim.
I would have written to yo a long time ago but I seem to have lost your e-mail address. I lost my address book with a PC crash. Sorry about that.
Please send it to me.

>>>>"what i like about it is that i can stand behind the hive"
I have been using the fogger (bought from ebay)for 2 seasons and I just walk up to the front of the hive - give a small puff to alert them to what is coming, then give the about 3 strong pulls to fill the hive. I then proceed to the next hive. With up to 5 hives in a row and separated by only 2 feet, I still have never been stung while fogging. I do not wear any protective gear for fogging and the bees do sometimes come boiling out and fly around the front of the hive for about 5 minutes. Possibly the FGMO acts like smoke and covers any alarm scents but they act more like they are just attempting to improve ventilation.

dear dr.
i called your number yesterday and your voice mail was full. if you still have the letter i mailed you in january, our phone number is at the top of the page.
as i mentioned before, i don't use my own computer and (believe it or not) i don't have my own personal phone.
if it will help, i'll send another copy of the letter and include our web page address, which contains another e-mail address at which you can reach me (in case you lost the other e-mail address in that pc crash).
please let me know (i'll check here tomarrow).
thanks.

one more question while i'm here.
has anybody used any other oil (essential oils) in the fogger besides thymol?
i ask because all the tymol based medications (such as api life var) are not passing section 18 where i am.

does anybody know if the dr. is in virginia yet?
i'm still reading up (i know, i'm slow) the thymol link michael gave was a big help, thank you. hearing that it's o.k. to use thymol with the supers on is a big help too!
i still have some more questions though.
1) are there any photographs that show how the cords hang in the hive (and maybe some more instructions about the cords).
2) since i'll be fogging a laxative into the hive is there any danger of... well... the honey getting alittle slippery? smile.gif (forgive me for asking what maybe a very dumb question, but i'm still learning).
Hi buford, No I havent noticed anything slippery in my hives. As for the cords Place them on top of the frames, lying across them. Give the Dr. a call or e-mail him. Take care JJ You must place the cords on top of the frames on each box, so if you have a brood box and a super you must put them on each one.

Let me stick a few (maybe dumb)questions in here also...
I've got my new Burgess fogger and ready to try this for the first time...in addition I've been putting FGMO soaked paper towel strips on top of frames
Have put on a screened bottom board...Also I have introduced, drawn and pulled/froze one drone foundation/frame so far....Thymol, cotton strings and small cell are in the future plans
..
To do a proper fogging treatment with FGMO and get ALL the bees in the hive, are we suppose to fog at night when "everyone is home"...or during the day when the field bees are out and only getting some of them dosed?
Does it make them mad and do I have to put on my suit if Im fogging from behind and under screened board during day
.
I've also seen some debate on if some commercial Thymol is pure enough to use and where to get the "goodest" stuff at?
Thanks in advance,
Scott

Hi Scott, I would not fog at night, the Dr. says fog when the bees are flying. I usually try to fog early in the morning or before dark when everyone is coming home. The bees usually dont get real upset when you fog, sometimes they come rushing out and start grooming. I would say put on your suit you never know how they might act, also I would wear something over your nose and mouth. The Dr. Is home now if you have questions you can either call him or e-mail. Take care Scott JJ
Hey Scott, I forgot about the THYMOL
Hey Scott, About the Thymol ask the Dr. when you either call or e-mail him. Take care JJ
