Saw my first drones today. Can I start splits now and have the bees make there own queens?

Probably. I like to see them flying.

Once drones are seen; by the time your split is made, queens raised by the split are ready to mate there should be plenty of drones mature enough to mate with your new queens

If I see flying drones I know they are more mature than newly emerged drones that stay in the hive. I also know the weather is nice enough for them to fly and I know there are enough of them for me to notice them flying. Mature drones in large enough numbers and warm enough weather for the queens to mate are what I'm waiting for. That and enough resources to set up mating nucs etc. smile.gif
