I have been raising them and using them in hives located in NC since 2001. The breeders have been
SMR Minn. Hyg. from Glenn Ap. (Minn. Hyg. Instrumentally Inseminated with SMR Drones). I have found them to be gentle, and good producers. They keep a clean box, relatively free of propolis. I only use them in Rockingham and Stokes Counties NC, where I can watch the wintering stores easily. Being Italians they keep larger clusters later.(keep them in Dbls)

Hives in the foothills of Va.(Patrick & Floyd Counties) I use a SMR Carn.; since 2000, they overwinter better in the colder climate. Gentle, build up quick, very little propolis.(Keep them in story & 1/2's
