Jay Smith, in Queen Rearing Simplified says 5/16". He says he got the best acceptance at that size.

Hi Eaglesbee,

Steve Taber did a series of experiments with cups size. He had some glass cups accurately blown to various diameters and lengths then tested their acceptance.

Cups that were 9mm by 9mm were univerally accepted. Any change in either dimension decreased the acceptance rate.
