People are bringing up the idea of taking nucs through the winter. Since they won't have much in the way of stores, they will have to feed these nucs.

I had to feed my hives through the coldest part of winter(end of Jan) into spring. I used hive-top feeders but found that the syrup froze solid at the bottom and I wonder how much my bees were actually able to take in.

What type of feeder would you recommend for winter feeding? Here in NJ we get a lot of rain/snow/sleet along with bitter cold so I hesitate to open the hive to fill a frame feeder.

Thanks for any advice,

yes I see this is in the wrong forum. I'll just repost it over in beekeeping 101. Sorry!
