Boy the more I do work for big bee outfits
the more I see some nasty, and illegal,
mite treatments going on. Makes me never
want to buy "store bought" honey again.
Most recently I saw batches of crisco and
tactik being mixed in a huge bakery styly
mixer. One ice cream scoopful is placed
on the bottom board under the bottom brood
box.......

Tactik <sp> is a mitecide used on livestock
that is currently at a zero tolerance in
USA.

Amitraz is the same pesticide that was in a mite strip that was briefly sold in the 90s to control both varroa and trachea mites. The manufacture was sued by a Florida migratory beekeeper that said his hives were killed off by the strips. The manufacturer pulled the product from the US market. I believe it is still available in Europe. Rumor is the beekeeper in question was also using other controls in his hives at the same time.
A number of migratory beekeepers are using cardboard or plywood strips dipped in Amitraz.
