Oxalic acid trickling destroys mites mouth parts during 3 days. http://www.moraybeekeepers.co.uk/varroa.htm

When you follow the results it is good to notice that time period.

Trickling is really effective used in winter if hive has real brood brake. I have not met results where trickling had been harmfull to bees. I have hear many claims that evaporating thymol or something kills larvae and eggs.

Here’s one that “proves” oxalic acid acts through systemic action.

web.uniud.it/eurbee/Proceedings/Varroa%20destructor.pdf

From the paragraph “Systemic action of oxalic acid in the control of Varroa destructor”:

“It was observed that the acaricide efficacy between the two ways of
administration did not differ (46%) significantly, but it were different from the mite
mortality observed in the control group (23%). Therefore it has been proved that oxalic
acid has an acaricide effect, through systemic action, once it has been intaken by the
bees”

As several people have mentioned, it seems likely the manner in which oxalic acid works is not really known.

ya know it's entirely plausible it has more than 1 mode of action

if I drink a strong acid it'll burn my mouth just before it burns a hole in my gut smile.gif
