Well I have small hive beetles and have heard all the talk about the bees will take care of them if the hive is strong, well my strongest hive has at least 20 beetles that I could see just going through it.During this weeks inspection I only found a few capped cells, alot of honey,no beetle larvae, but no brood. We are at the tail end of any type of a flow .This is a good sized hive with 2 brood and one super w/ foundation.I would say at least 15-18 frames of bees.but does look like the numbers are falling off.I am using guard star ground drench in a 3 foot radious around the hive.
Now the question:What should I do right now to fix this?Try check-mite to control them,Move them to another spot,(1 acre limit)treat and move,or just leave them along and hope for the best?
Also one of my weakest hives which I also seen beetles in has boomed in the last few weeks and doubled it's numbers now to the point that they are passing the strongest hive.(All should be the same race, but Caucasian queens are black and the one hive in question has a orangeish colored queen).I know sounds like I need to maybe requeen .I'm at a point here where I don't want to lose this hive but then again I don't know what can really be done.
Any help would help.

I have recently heard predatory nematodes work well for controlling the soil stage, and that a study will be published shortly on the subject. Also some entomologist types have suggested keeping the comb to bee ratio low so there is less vacant comb for the bees to have to guard. The beetles are known to migrate in groups from hive to hive until they find ideal reproduction conditions; perhaps this could serve in trapping them. I have heard some people have had luck with the various traps you can build or buy. I know this is not much to go on; I just wanted to share some of the gleanings I have heard lately incase they might help.

I would sure like to see the study results when available. A sideliner friend mentioned last week that he was going to try some predatory nematoes to help control his SHB infestation. This was the first I have heard of them.

If your are using a screened bottom board, be sure to use Guardstar underneath the hive or they will just crawl under the hive and pupate there. Two years ago I found small hive beetles in two of my hive treating, with Guardstar seemed to do the trick, with an added benefit of controlling ants. I have not noticed any signs this year, I don’t know it Michigan winters makes it harder for them to flourish? Also Brushy Mountain Bee Farm sells a SHB trap.

Well the guard-star is working, slowly but todays inspection show a large drop in beetle numbers,5 vers 30+.No sbb on the hives, but I still sprinkle it under the hives just to be sure and 3 feet around them..So maybe there's hope.

Well I lost a whole hive to SHB and the best thing I have found is the Small Hive Beetle trap it works great for me. I installed and have not had any trouble with SHB, The only thing is you have to check the trap every 10 days too 2 weeks and clean it and replace the oil.
