I've no direct confirmation of this yet, but there's a story going the rounds that SHB was found in Portugal a week ago. Apparently it was in hives illegally imported from the States. The hives have been destroyed, the area disinfected, and officialdom is 'optimistic' that the beetles didn't have time to spread. Even if they did get this one in time, how many idiots are out there illegally moving bees around undetected?

Is the importation of bees/queens regulated in any way in the EU/UK?
Seems to me that this is becoming daily more essential.

It certainly is in the UK. Off the top of my head, I think New Zealand is the only place you can legally import queens from. Colonies, as far as I know, can't legally be imported at all. Smuggling, unfortunately, is easy.

Hi, I just read that the SHB (small hive beetle) was found this October in Portugal. It is claimed in the report that it came from an import from the US. The hive was destroyed and there is hope that it was the only occurence so far. If I find the link again I will post it. BTW it was written in German.

Sorry Robert, we must have read the same report and I did not your first note on the subject.
