Here are test results from Api Life Var as a Varroa treatment.

Tests are made 2000/2001 under guidance from Dr. Peter Rosenkranz and Dr. Klaus Wallner, both from the University Hohenheim Germany.

20 beekeepers had tested the product on 217 colonies. Most beekeepers had experiences with Api Life Var (2-10 years) only 3 beekeepers worked the first time with it.

11 beekeepers had cut drone brood during the year and 9 beekeepers used a second treatment (5 oxalic acid 4 Perizin = chumafos).

First treatment with Api Life Var between August 19 and September 20, second treatment two weeks later.

Between 18 and 3270 Varroa has been killed during the treatment. Average from each beekeeper. The highest killing was 12960 in a single hive.

9 beekeepers made a winter treatment with Perizin or Oxalic acid and the average killing was between 3 and 240 Varroa. The other beekeepers made no winter treatment and they had a daily natural mite fall between 0,1 and 6 Varroa.
3 beekeeper had more than 1 mite per day.

Winter loss was under 10%

Judgment:

During the tests they lost only one colony through the Varroa. In consideration of the experiences most beekeepers already had with Thymol it looks like Api Life Var or other Thymol products give the possibility keeping bees without loss through the mites.

With a rest infestation of several 100 mites in some hives it is absolutely necessary for a winter treatment with a different product.
