buliding a honey house

I have been looking, but so far have been unable to find any
guidelines and/or reccomendations on what makes a good honeyhouse for a
small honey producer. I think that our farm status will protect us from
some of this stuff, but eventually I think I will have to build a
dedicated building to process my honey. If you have seem any ideas
and/or plans for a small scale honeyhouse, could you send me the info so
I can start my research.

At the Heartland Apicultural Society (HAS)
summer 2004 meeting, there was a very
complete presentation on this subject by
someone who's name escapes me.

This fellow had to comply with the unusually
stringent rules in either KY or TN (I forget
which), and ended up with things like 3
different sinks (one for washing a mop, one
for washing hands, and one for washing the
implements used in honey processing.

Anyway, he may have the ultimate overkill
design.

Rob Mountain may be able to find him for
you, as he is (or was) some sort of official
big-shot in HAS.

In IL we have food processing rules we have to go by. The three basin sink is for wash,rinse and sanatize. you need a seperate sink for hand washing. Are you looking for workflow setup and size or are you looking for materials needed and cost. I built a 40 x 40 and sectioned off my extraction room from the rest like the guidlines state. It always cost more then you think so be prepared for a shock. It is a lot of fun to design and build it.

thanks we to had the state talk to us at the last beekeeping assocation meeting. the main think im looking for are building plans for a honey houes for a small operation that in cludes all the reqierments from the state but in a small room?

I would look at the book Hive and the honey bee. They have some layouts of different size honey houses. Then go to the state health dept and ask what they need in it.

I discussed this subject about 30 years ago with a successful commercial beekeeper. He said to figure out how much space you need for your honeyhouse..... Then double it as you will always need more room!! Its served me well thru the years.
