I keep hearing how the farmers alminac is predicting a hard winter this year, I don't need the alminac to tell me this, this is my first year overwintering hives(6) i figure we will have 6-10' of snow and record cold (typical of my luck with new ventures) anyone else's ideas?

To paraphrase Will Rogers, "Only a fool or a foriegner would try to predict Nebraska weather, and I am neither."

All I know is: (1) the hummingbirds are starting to pack it in (2) the squirrels are collecting (3) the garden spiders have set up their roadblocks (4) seeing wooly bear caterpillars all over the place. None of this usually happens until late September, so I'm expecting a cold winter. Now if the hurricanes would just think it was late September. . .

I'm thinking that if this winter follows how this summer went we are in for a MONSTER winter. Here in Missouri we normally have consistently 90 degree days from June into September with some 100s thrown in occasionaly. We have only had like 10 days in the 90s all summer and most of the time has been hi 70s low 80s. WE're gonna FREEZE. http://www.beesource.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Winters are also hard to predict in PA. We have had mostly cool weather this summer. Mainly high 70s to low 80s. However, it has been a very wet summer. I have lived here my whole life, and if I had to make a prediction, I would say a long winter, mild snowfall, and very few fridged temps. I am a firm believer in weather cycles, and it seems like we are in that cycle. But, throw in a good old fashioned noreaster, and we could also get buried with snow.

I'll stick with raising bees instaed of predicting the weather!

Hard to tell here. We had an early and hot spring and a hot dry summer. So everything is early going into fall. I always want a hard winter but we rarely get them. Last year was close with some great cold snaps.

Well here in south texas its usually in the 70s to 80s and a cold 55 at night. Sometimes we do get a few northers, days in the 40s but as soon as the wind comes back from the south we warm back up. I cant remember the last time we had a freeze it has been a few years. The best part about it all is the mid febuary dandylion bloom. Malcolm
