I have read that a top bar hive produces less honey and more comb.
Why is this?

it's because the way most folks run a TBH you harvest the wax when you harvest the honey
you get lots of wax but the bees then have to rebuild it which reduces your honey yield (it costs honey to produce wax)
it's possible to get around this by using regular supers on your TBH, but at that point it's not really a TBH is it?

At this point I just want to experience the growth of the colony and perhaps split it into another one next year. I haven't even thought about what to do with honey.
