Feeding or not?

I called up my main supplier yesterday to purchase some pollen substitute for supplemental feeding of my two hives. When I tried to order some he said that there was some debate if the pollen substitute is effective. He had not ordered any yet and didn't seem certain if he was going to.

My two hives at this point have good stores and seem to be doing well. This is my second year and I am hoping to make some early splits to increase my hive numbers.

Is supplemental feeding of pollen substitute effective and do you recommend it?
