I just took some honey off of my hives and I noticed something odd about the flavor. I can't decide if the flavor is minty or menthol. I treat with menthol in the fall per instructions. No honey supers are on at that time. I did not treat this Spring. Is it possible that some residual menthol lingered in the hive bodies from last Sept until this honey season? I have not seen this before. It may be that the flavor is minty as I have some mint-family plant growing around my apiary this year. It sounds odd but I can't decide which flavor it is. Anybody have thoughts on it?

By the way, the hives were brand new last year (as were the colonies) so there is no more than one year's worth of stuff built up in the hive bodies...

I think if you are useing fall menthol per directions, you should not be tasteing it in your honey. We make alot of horsemint honey here which has a strong minty smell and taste with a pronounced aftertaste.

I sat around last night and ate some more (and more and more...) and I think the flavor is mint rather than menthol so that allayed my fears some. I had a ton of it in the area so it is not a surprise I guess. Neither the honey nor the frames smelled of menthol after I went back and checked again so I think it is just the type of honey...it has a different plavor for sure. Maybe I will go and sample some more to be sure...
