..how is the brood kept separate from the honey?
I know that an excluder is used to in a standard hive.

the bees do it there selves
they have an area for brood and an area for honey
you just swipe honey from the appropriate place smile.gif

[edit] more detail
the brood area will have honey and pollen in it
leave that alone, that's theirs
full frames of honey you can steal (within reason)

The bees keep the brood in one consolidated place if you let them. The only reason I've seen a queen lay brood scattered about is when she can't find enough drone cells in the brood nest to keep the drone brood in the brood nest and she lays a little patch of drone up in some super.

Actually it's NOT standard. Certainly not in my hives and not in many people's hives. Using an excluder is a personal choice and I'd say many people do and many people don't.
