A coworker called me this afternoon to report that in Montana a truck carrying 500 hives overturned on a road and spewed millions of very cross bees out ,I have heard of this before ,does'nt the beekeeper just set all the hives up on the side of the road and let them cone home ?

No it is not that simple.
My father and I had this happen to us in South Africa. 350 hives of pure African Bees. It is really an ugly MESS !!!!!!. Many of the hive bodies are destroyed beyond repair, not to mention the frames are usually totally smashed, and just think about the queens. Often lots of bees are killed by the spilled diesel fuel, besides the ones that are just crunched.
My heart goes out to this beekeeper. In fact if any one knows who it was, I would be grateful to find out.
In CA we had a beekeeper over turn a truck on his way to deliver 19 barrels of honey for sale. All 19 burst open, and of course all the honey ran out. News of this reached the surrounding beekeepers. Finally when this person got to the point of sale to explain what happened. There were 19 barrels of honey standing there that had been brought in by local beekeepers. Yes, beekeepers do care for each other.
