My brother has a flatbar wood holder that he does not want. It would make a nice hive stand getting the bees about 2 feet off the ground.
Is there any advantage getiing the bees of the ground?
How would it effect the insulation properties of the hive?

It's a lot easier on your back when you don't have to bend over so much for inspections. It may also help with mice and skunks.
I use 2 cinder blocks to support each end of 2 long 4x4s. It's a decent height for inspections without the stack of supers getting too high.

I use some landscape timbers (4" X 5") suspended between three concrete blocks on each end to hold my nucs. This facilitates working without bending and eliminates the skunk problem.
I don't know how the raising the hive could affect the insulation properties of a hive though, I do not think it would matter whether the hive was sitting on wood, concrete or steel.

I put mine as low as possible and sit on a stool to work them. It helps keep me from fighting to put supers on so high I can't reach them. But I have upper entrances for the skunks.
