I use 2 gallon plastic pails with snap-on lids, so I need to drill the holes rather than punch with a nail. What size drill should I use? Also, some writers suggest making 4 or 5 holes. Are the bees waiting in line for a free spot; would 10 or 12 holes be better (assuming there is adequate space between each hole) or would that be of no value?

I use only 4 holes. They work great. The more holes the bigger chance of leaking. I can't remember the size of drill bit I was using. If I can find it I will let you know.

Holes are in the lid, then snapped on liquid-tight; then inverted over the inner cover. Last year it worked well so I want to expand, but have been wondering if there is a known best size and number for the holes.

I use the 2 gallon buckets as well. I drill about 10-15 holes. I use a 1/16" or so drill bit. I have more trouble with larger holes than I do with more holes.
