View Full Version : It's days like these that remind me why I took up beekeeping
The weather here today is just gorgeous. . .low 80's, low humidity, a soft breeze. Went out by my bee house to sit down and watch my girls for a while. They're flying back and forth--still collecting something. I think by now it must be goldenrod. Anyway, they're not flying frantically like they usually do; just a casual back and forth with peace at every entrance. They look bright yellow when they fly through the sunlight. And there's a constant low hum emanating from the string of hives. Ahhhh. What a lovely way to spend time. It's times like these that make lifting all those 80-lb, honey loaded supers worth the while. Just the fact that we're all happy and all at peace. Whatta Sunday.

I brought a colony in last night from last saturday's removal. I left the robber screen on and opened the top so they could go in and out. When I checked them today, the screen was covered with bees. While watching to see if they were having touble finding the entrance, I saw, for the first time in my life, the waggle dance. She would go straight up, shaking as she went, stop, make about a 2 inch half-circle, then repeat it.
I was mesmerized. I watched as bees would come up to her, touch, then fly off.
Yes, TIA, it is a beautiful day in NC.

I had an opportunity to show a seven year old boy honeybees foraging in my chastetree and then my colonies, which we topped off with a huge spoonful of honeys...he said now he was not afraid of bees anymore, and it WAS lovely!!
Cheers to all. Donna
