Hive Top Feeder w/ Internal Floats

I purchased a hive top feeder from Kelley's and it has a wire mesh screen in place to keep the bees from drowning. Question? I have made several others, and I am wondering if I make a narrow wooden platform that floats will it be successful? I got the idea off an e-bay seller. This concept would help keep the cost down since I have the scrap wood.

I prefer the ones with screen so I can fill them without facing the bees. I don't even have to suit up. The ones with floats seem to drown more bees. But they are easier to clean and make nice open feeders that you can set off a ways from your hives.
