Position of Mann Lake swarm trap

What is the correct position of the Mann Lake swarm Trap? I say it is with the hole on the bottom so that they can build on the lid for easy removal. My partner says that it is with the hole facing sideways like you see in the catalog. Which way?

When I've seen them used they were sideways. I haven't used them.

I have mine sideways, caught 4 swarms the first year I used it.
