I would like to tell newbees like me that Ross Rounds work just like their advertisements. I just finished my first honey harvest. I had put a ross round super on my best hive and it was filled pretty quickly, then it came apart as advertised, 32 perfect rounds. You have to also buy the plastic containers though, I don't know what I would have done with the rounds without them.
I hope my first harvest by extraction goes as well.

I just put up my 1st super of Ross Rounds yesterday. Seemed to take the bees a while to fill it, but the rounds sure looks pretty. Just put the super back on today hoping to get some sourwood. The little plastic containers, rings and labels are fairly costly though.
Did a super today of crush & strain using the 2 bucket method. That was messy! Made the buckets according to Michael Bushs plans and they worked great! Just need something besides cheesecloth to do the filtering. I guess it will take a while for it all to drain into the bottom bucket. Then I have to figure out how to get the honey out of the 5 gallon bucket into small honey jars. That will be interesting. Michael, how do you suggest doing that? My only guess is a funnel. Might have to look at a honey gate for that bucket!

i bought (for $1 each) 2lb buckets with handles and snap on lids from the local bakery, they had cookie dough and filling stuff in them. they're a nice size for me to lift and also when the honey crystalizes im able to put the whole bucket into a stock pot of warm water.

any way, i bought the plastic gates from Dadant.
i decided to cut holes in my lids instead of the buckets for a couple of reasons;
with the different flavors of honey that i have i can switch the lid as needed for the flavor wanted.
if the gate was on the bucket - the bucket wouldnt fit in my stock pot!
when i need to fill a jar i just lay the bucket on its side and open the gate - it works for me.

i hope my RR get filled as well and as fast as yours when i put mine on!!!

Like Dee, I also use the two gallon buckets for my honey. After emptying the honey out of my extractor into five gallon buckets, I then run the honey thru a screen with a nylon on it while pouring the honey into my two gallon buckets. I store all of my honey in the two gallon buckets which allows me to put them into a canning pot to reliqify them on an as needed basis.

I get the buckets free from local bakeries, well they're free except for a jar of honey every now and then. smile.gif

Hay guys go down to the beer and wine Making store... there are a lot more beer maker than bee keeper stores and pickup a 6 gal beer bucket with a gate valve and plastic funnel with a strainer, they are a lot cheaper. 6 gal bucket with valve $ 16.00 to $ 20.00… 10” funnel that goes on top of bucket with strainer $5.00 to $8.00… Steeping Bags .25 to .50 ea.
