View Full Version : Odd honey cappings

Opened up yesterday and pulled out the end frame in the second deep. It was mostly full of honey, but the cappings were strange. Instead of individual cells, it looked like one surface with wavy lines over the surface, like you would get if you put plastic wrap over liquid wax and then lifted it off. I thought maybe it was because it was the end frame, but the next frame looked the same. Any ideas?

On a side note, I could barely lift that super. I either need to get to the gym, or abandon the idea of putting a third deep on there.

Hi Hobie
There is nothing wrong with the cappings it is just the way the Bees do it. the cell walls are so close that when each one is capped they look wavy and a solid cover of cappings with inperfections as to being smooth.
you will notice the difference when they cap brood, the top is more rounded and individual and looks like thin cardboard or brown paper, but honey cappings are more like what you described and have a white color to them.
On the matter of another deep - I hope your back is in good shape because you will need it if you put on another deep.
Here in Northeast Kentucky I use one deep for the brood and one shallow for their stores.
and i just add more shallow supers for honey which are a lot easier to lift.
Good luck
