Stupid Stupid Stupid....

I always tell my friend beekeepers and any of my other friends who want to come work the bees with me that most of the time when you get stung, you are doing something stupid. I am the proof to this.

I worked some hives this evening when it was nice out and a slight wind. I went over to one hive at the house and killed the old queen as she was laying badly and the hive was really weak. Will combine a stong nuc tomarrow.

All went well than I took a peak at all the other hives and all seemed well so I wentinto the garage and got my wife as we were going on a nightly walk.

On the way back, we went by the hives and I wanted to get some feed bottles to refill later. I went up to a side of a hive and WAMMMMM. I got nailed on the forhead. I ran for it while my wife was lauging.

Now I type this with a patch of tootpaste on my forhead.

Boy, Chef Isaac, can I relate! That's exactly the type of stupid thing I do that lends to stings--seldom when I'm working them. I was behind the row of hives the other night and thought I'd just take a peek to check entrance activity. I leaned between two hives (they're about 2' apart) when WHAMM! Right on the chin!
There's always that rogue girl that wants to make you pay for "stupid beekeeper tricks."

Fortunately only the bees were watching me, Dave. But I could hear them laughing all the way back to the house!

My 12'x20' vegie garden is three feet behind my two hives. Had hives from Nucs just over two weeks. I have spent plenty of time in the garden and so has my son, once with a noisy tiller. So far, so good. I think we are ok bc we are Behind the hives. Hope they stay as tolerant all summer.

I have 7 hives within my 40' x 15' or so vegetable garden. I work right next to and in front of them. Slowly and deiberately. No stings from gardening activity - just from stupid beekeeper mistakes when I worka the bees. I do plan to get the number down to 3. I need some room to plant some okra.

I got ya beat! I had hoisted a bucket to a swarm with lure in it in the afternoon. (Had my armor on.) THat evening I went back to see if they were ready to move. The bees had moved into the bucket,but several were at the entrance. I sprayed them from the ground with syrup since I left my armor and smoker at home. While lowering the bucket one of the syrup coated girls found my bare foot in the sandals and WHAM. LESSON LEARNED! I normally don't swell to bad from a sting, but this one got my goat. my foot tripled in size and part of my lower leg. You know....it is hard to get a foot that size into a firefighters boot! (Try explaining that to your boss!)

Once, Last year I wore wool socks while working the bees. Surprise! Stung right on the ankle. Hat was on wrong once. Veil was close to my face. Surprise! Stung right on the tip of my nose. etc, etc...
