View Full Version : Adding sugar syrup before harvest
I have one medium super fully capped with honey. I had added an additional super about 4 weeks ago and they have done nothing with it. I have even switched positions with the full super. Would it be wise to add a sugar pail so that I could have the drawn comb in the other super for next year? Or can this sugar syrup end up in the capped honey somehow?

It might be ok. But since it's capped why not pull the finished super then start feeding.

The sugar probably won't end up in the capped honey, but what if you can't keep it straight in your head which super you left where? Seems less confusing to pull the one you want to harvest and leave the one you won't.
I had planned on waiting until a fellow beekeeper could assist me with the extraction process... that being later this month. I may try and round up some equipment before then. Thanks.

Darin:
If you harvest this medium, how much will that leave the bees for winter?

Dave,
I have 2 deep hive bodies that I'm leaving for winter.

Darin,
You could always put the capped super in a plastic garbage bag and freeze it until extraction time. Course you have to let it thaw out--in the bag.

Hi Denise,
you said that one could keep the capped super in a plastic bag and freeze it till extraction. Why freeze it ? Can't one just leave it at room temperature, well closed to avoid pests or insects to get in ?

The bees will draw out foundation and cap sugar syrup. It will be dependent on how much by how heavy you make it. if it is 2 parts water and 1 part sugar, they will feed and draw more foundation out. If it is 1 to 1 or more sugar they will cap some of it. I have one hive that capped a whole deep this spring with it.
