Is it any use to put 20 hives a quarter mile from 20 others? Would it relieve pressure at all? I have heard the common wisdom about 3 square miles of forage.

They will be competeing for the same forage.

40 (and larger) colony yards are common here.

And it's 3 mile radius. Closer to 30 square mile... my math is off a bit I'm sure. ;)

The area of a circle with a 3 mile radius is approximately 28.26 square miles. Close enough, Bruce. smile.gif

pi r square. Cornbread r round.

1/4 mile away will be a little less overlap and better than 40 in the same spot, but I'd go for at least four miles away to make a lot of difference.

While they will forage 3 miles on occasion, they are much more likely to forage about a mile and half most of the time and two miles a little less often.

But, as mentioned, that's a radius. Not square miles.
