We just got two nucs from a member of the local bee club. We painted one hive light blue, the other is white and painted symbols on the front to avoid drift. We used starter strips on the rest of the frames. My wife and I shared a glance when the beekeeper while sliding them to make room said, "Make sure you get some foundation in there soon as ya can". He didn't notice the 3/4" strips.
The bees are going through 1 quart jars of 1:1 syrup in less then a day.
I am anxious to see how much comb has been drawn out. We will check the hives Saturday (the one week point).
Now the question...
Would it be recommended to pail feed instead of using quart jars for just 2 or 3 hives? They are probably spending an hour of daylight with no food in the jars.

Thank you,
Robert

Robert I'm a newbie and about to try starter strips for the first time and I'm nervous. Please post how your bees are doing on yours.

Also, I don't know if you are willing to inside feed, but the Kelley company has this cool two-jar feeder that you put inside the hive in an empty deep stacked on top of the brood box. I haven't tried it but I'm definitely getting some this fall. The feeder is about $5 I think.

This time of year you could not feed at all and they will do ok. Of course it will help. A few hours of no feed won't hurt them.

Thanks Michael.

KyBee-I will post an update on Saturday after I check the hive. Possibly with pictures.
