Just released a queen, introduced to the colony about a week ago, into the hive. Very shortly after, we heard her pipe twice, then nothing. Had the sinking feeling it was a distress call. Anyone have any wisdom to offer?

Was she placed inside the hive, inside of her cage?

She was introduced inside her cage in the nuk but, in the week since then, had not been released so we "helped".

Were the bees showing an interest in her? Usually they would have eaten out the candy by then.

Piping is not necessarily distress. I could be. Is it possible there is another queen in the nuc?

We looked and looked but couldn't find her. Doesn't mean she wasn't there, though. We're pretty new at this and don't always know what we're looking at. We introduced this new queen because there were very few larvae in the frames when they arrived although the colony seemed to be doing well otherwise. Could a difference in breed be a factor?
