View Full Version : Smell from the hive

Hi, I seem to have a smell coming from the hive and it is very strong. With the wind in the right direction I can smell it about 50 feet away. It smells like rotten buttered popcorn, I guess. I think in my area purple loostrife and golden rod is still in bloom. Could the smell be from the ripening of the golden rod or purple loostrife honey ?

Probably not loosestrife but the golden rod and asters.

Never heard it called the smell of rotten popcorn, but here in Ohio its a smell of bees making honey. To me its the smell of a late honey crop and also the bees preparing for a long long winter. I love that smell and you will too Im sure. http://www.beesource.com/ubb/smile.gif
Let it flow.

first thing I would do is to find a old beekeeper to check your hive.
all the yrs of kepping bees I never heard of that smelling like pop corn.
your hive should always smell like honey very nice to the aroma.
if it smells like something rotten you have a problem I think.
well you take off your lid it should smell pleasent.
foul brood and small hive beetle have a bad smell=good luck

It definitely sounds like the end of the Rag Weed flow and the beginning of the Golden Rod flow. It does smell very buttery. Our fall harvest wouldn't be the same without it. Steve

Frohnho, I had to chuckle to myself when I read your post. The first fall of my beekeeping I was in the yard in the evening and smelled what I described as dirty gym socks!!!! I guess it all depends on each individuals' senses. I would have to agree with WJW777, stinky or not, you will soon look forward to that smell.
