Hello. I was thinking of making an inner cover out of some 1/4" plywood. Would this be ok or do I need the frame that goes around like a store bought one for that little extra space above and below the inner cover?

It depends. Different boxes from different companies have different depth rabbets for the frame rests. If you have between 1/4 and 3/8" left between the top of a frame and the top of the box, yes, a flat board will work fine. If you have less, then it won't work very well at all. If you have more, you need to put some metal frame rests in. But the other thing a inner cover is designed to do is create a dead air space at the top to cut down on condensation. Without some kind of frame ABOVE you won't get that. A 1/4" to 3/8" thick frame on the top will give you that. If you're not going to do that, then why not just take 1/2" to 3/4" thick plywood and make a top with no inner cover?
