View Full Version : Drone Comb vs. Regular Comb

Being new, I still cannot easily tell the difference between drone comb and regular comb. I would appreciate a link to any side by side pictures if they exist.

I'm not sure I could tell from the comb itself, but the cappings on drone cells are more domed. I wasn't sure I could tell either, but when I finally saw some, I knew what it was. Here's a photo that shows worker and drone cells.

Before they are capped you can just measure across ten cells. Drone is in the range of 6.0cm to 7.0cm with most around 6.6cm or so. Worker will be in the range of 5.4cm to 4.4cm.

If it's capped, the drone caps have a dome on top. The worker brood is mostly flat and only SLIGHTLY convex.

The drone comb is really different,much bigger. You will recognize it when you see it.
