I have one hive that is packed full of capped brood and honey.. queen has nowhere to lay... considering making a split.
Can I put the frames in a nuc and expect them to make a queen and establish a new colony strong enough to last through the coming winter?
Will the new colony have to be transfered from the nuc to a standard hive body of some sort?

That is a reasonable expectation this time of year.

Eventually.

It is just right in the Valley for a split; The Black Berries are just starting to come on so go for it... I would leave a frame or two of brood in the main hive and place them in the new nuc/hive a week at a timeĀ… for three weeks. Do not for get the frame of pollen and honey.

I pretty much did the same thing last week--I hived a large swarm a few weeks ago that seemed to be queenless (thanks to me I'm sure) and gave it eggs, open brood and capped larvae on four frames (two from each of my strongest hives) and a frame of pollen/nectar.

This evening, I had three queen cells on one frame, which I left with the swarm hive, and I gave the second frame with two QCs to a nuc...along with all the bees on the frame, a frame of honey/pollen and some extra workers. I considered adding a frame of brood, but I'm thinking these girls are young enough to eitiher wait for the queen to hatch, mate, settle and lay...and I can always stick another frame of capped brood in there. In the meantime, I'm sure they'll make themselves busy building comb and captializing on the blackberries.
