Is there a good or bad time to remove the entrance reducer? I have kept it in due to the cold weather we have had in the Northeast, but it is about to warm up and was going to remove it and feed the bees... thanks

Leave the reducer in while you're feeding to prevent any possible robbing. Once there is a traffic jam at the reducer, you can move it to the next size opening, or take it out.

Chris, do you have other hives nearby? One consideration would be the reducer might help limit robbing when you start feeding. I reduce the hives' entrances whenever feeding syrup. Robbing is not near the problem if you use frames of honey as feed.

The reducer isn't for warmth. It's for reducing robbing, mice and other pests. I leave them in until they get a traffic jam, but I get to take a look at them every day. If they were miles away where I dont see them for a month or so, I might open them up sooner.

I thought it was for warmth as well? This is my first hive going into their first early spring, but i have two more on the way... I guess there is no need for it now, but i will keep it handy when the other two are started. After my first year i have found this quite a great hobby.
thanks once again...
Chris
