Well a nice calm evening at the bee yard, popped a cover on a recently made split and holding a frame in the usual position {eye level}looking for a newly emerged queen when my eyes quickly changed from near focus to far to catch a movement not 6 feet away.
Didnt really know what it was for about 1 millionth of a sec. when I did figure it out I let out a warhoop {very loud yell}that must have deafened that blackbear.
He also let out a very loud woof and left the seen promply, leaving me standing in the bear defensive position with my formitable bear weapons....A smoker and hive tool!
Looking for some advice here. Will that bear be back? and what can I do about it other than an ele. fence? Thanks Scott---bee hero

I heard a guy on comedy radio on my XM the other night who was talking about bear attacks and the strategy involved in avoiding them. He said when the bear gave up about the time he s*** in his britches and the bear's olfactory senses were assaulted.

There have been several discussions on here about electric fences for bears by people with experience. Search on Bears or Fences and you should find them.

Sometimes you just have to read other peoples problems to know you have things good LOL.Just small critters and farm fields here.Glad i dont have to make something bigger than i am made.do not need more laundry. From what i read the key to a good bear fence is half cooked beacon. good luck

Bears are why part of my beekeeping garb is a .357. I have used it 4 times to scare away bears. I don't really want to hurt them.

I wouldn't really want to hurt them either, but would rather do that than for them to hurt me. I've been pinned down by a female cub that was about a year old when I was a teenager and worked at a wildlife preserve, and that was by a tame, hand-raised bear. It was a little scary to see how strong they are, and I can't imagine having to deal with a wild one. Sure glad we don't have any large wild bears in Texas.

I think you all should start renting your yards out to bear hunters!!!
