I understand that to move a hive a couple hundred yards, I first need to move them at least two miles and leave them there for two weeks. Then they can be moved to a spot within a couple hundred yards of their original location. Is this correct?

That's usually the best bet. Bees are creatures of habit, and when hives are only moved a short distance, the bees may just fly back to the previous site, clump up, and eventually die in the clump. When you move them to totally new territory, they will mark the new location of the hive much better. Once they have learned the new area, you can move them back and it will be a new area too.
