Well I new it would happen eventually. I've had my hives about two months now and had not gotten any stings until this weekend. Of course it is my own fault. I got to brave for my own good. Started off with vail, long sleeve shirts, pants, gloves, smoker etc. Every time I went to the hive I started leaving off something. "They seemed so gentle" LOL. Got me a couple of times on Saturday while I was gloveless. Still not a big deal, I sat down did my inspections and observed for a while with no other problems. Went back Sunday to add a couple of supers and WHAM! Just like my wife, I made them mad and don't have any idea how I did it. Little buggers were bound and determined to keep me away but I persevered. I know I am becoming a true beekeeper because even though I was in pain from the stings, I was feeling bad that the bees had do die from stinging me. My wife thinks the bee poison has gone to my head (I told her only two actually to the head).
Well I have at least determined that getting stung a few times, while not pleasent, will not keep me from enjoying beekeeping.

Just keep thinking about how good the honey will taste and the pain disappears quicker! ;)

Welcome to the club. I came in yesterday and told my wife the bees were in a good mood, I only got 8 or 10 stings.

I got stung twice over the weekend for working 4 hives and 4 nucs.
Oh yeah - shorts, t-shirt, veil - no gloves, no smoke.

You can work fifty nice hives in a day and never get a sting. You can work one hot hive in a day and get lots of stings. smile.gif

I don't know. My one room schoolhouse didn't teach me to count that high.

My son and I extracted a huge colony on Monday. I got hit 4 times, he got hit 6 times. He keeps telling me that I only take him along to act as a target for the bees. :D

I combined my 2 hives on Saturday. Really really had to find the bum queen in one, so I was fussing with them a lot. Smoke, but no protection. One sting because she went up my pants leg and I slapped her before she could get (ahem) up too high. She slapped back.
The next day I just went out to watch and admire. One bee decided to chase me off. I left and returned. She remembered me and would follow a good 20 feet. I finally got tired of being run off and decided to sit down and take my arthritis shot. That did it. She lost interest and left me alone. Go figure.
I was inspecting my hive today and by the time I did what I set out to do the lady's were really upset. They followed me more than 120 feet and were still trying to tag me. When I finaly got them to leave me alone and went into the house Ilost count past 100 stings. They were only able to get through by gloves three times and they were not bad. I knew the hive was hot but I did not know they were going to be that hot.

Yikes, Owen.
Is there a queen in that hive?

Someone on here said it best a couple weeks ago,
"Just like Dad- one warning, then WHAM!!"
That one makes me laugh.

"Just like Dad- one warning, then WHAM!!"
And Dad had more than one WHAM in him.
Yes Tom, there is a Queen, who is going to be replaced next week.
I need to know how if I need to do some thing with my vail after I take out the stingers? I will remove the stinger from my gloves again and wash them.

When I work my house hives, my roommate and his friend will typically come out and watch, standing about 4 feet from the hive. They are usually in baggy shorts, bare feet, and tee shirt despite my advice of not wearing shorts.
Mr. Beekeeper in his half suit, BDUs, sometimes gloves sometimes not, and running smoker is the one who always gets stung once or twice.
My outyard Buckfast F1s are getting smarter. They now seem to wait till I return to my Jeep parked 30 feet away for the game of "Chase the Beekeeper" (after I have taken off my half suit and I am sitting in the AC in my Jeep drinking ice water).
Actually I would much rather be home playing Chase the Beekeeper than being here on the international border in Arizona where the daytime temps have been reaching 115 degrees F.
Well, yesterday was my first to do the Beek jig, with full flapping. I went out to check the screen trap for mite/SHB larvae, but this time a girl was just plain p***ed-off. She tried nailing me on the head, but got tangled in what little hair that I have left. I got her out of it and thought she would see the light as I tried a fast turkey trot. No, she was intent on nailing me. She landed on my t-shirt sleeve and was giving it H***. I finally had to use extreme force to end the attack. I really felt bad about it, but not as bad as if she had been successful. You just never know. I had done this (approaching from the rear of the hive) about five times without incident.

I go out to watch my bees every day. I am curious and always end up poking around a little more than I should without protection. I end up getting stung almost every day.
Yesterday afternoon I removed a feeder jar and really upset them. I took several stings to the head, one right between the eyes. My eyes were swollen almost shut, I could barely see by the time I got in the house.
An old fool and his hobby!!
